Background
The Problem
ADHD is often misrepresented or parodied in fictional media, which distorts public perception of the disorder. These inaccuracies can contribute to stigma, fostering a lack of empathy and understanding toward those who live with ADHD.
INSIGHTS
Misrepresentation in media can leave individuals with ADHD feeling alienated or even vilified. In contrast, positive and accurate portrayals help foster empathy and a deeper understanding. Like many mental health disorders, ADHD is diverse and complex, with symptoms that manifest differently in every individual.
Objective
The goal is to challenge the common misconceptions about ADHD in fictional media by promoting a more nuanced understanding of the disorder. By creating a work of fiction that authentically portrays the complexities of ADHD, this project aims to empower those with the disorder to embrace their unique strengths while fostering awareness and acceptance in broader audiences.
The solution
A story-driven video game focused on decision-making and character development. The cast showcases different aspects of ADHD, highlighting their unique strengths and traits. ADHD is presented not as a weakness but as a source of strength that drives the story forward. With video games reaching a wider audience than ever—often surpassing television and comics—this project targets teens and young adults aged 15 and up, whether they have ADHD, know someone with it, or simply enjoy meaningful narratives.
The story follows Theo, a young girl living in a small West Coast town. She and her friends are street artists, renowned for their striking murals. When tensions within the group cause a rift, Theo finds herself alone—until a nightmare featuring a monstrous figure delivers an ominous warning. The next day, her friends have vanished, and Theo resolves to bring them back. She discovers she can travel into their murals, a newfound ability that may hold the key to reuniting them.
Theo, the protagonist and playable character, allows players to shape her journey through dialogue and choices. She is kind, empathetic, and often the glue that holds her group together. Her character reflects the anxiety that frequently accompanies ADHD, offering a relatable and compelling lens for players to explore.
